If nobody comes into your store, you have nobody to sell your products to. You may have the most amazing store, but without visitors walking in it becomes pointless. The same applies to your website. If you spend £5,000 on a beautifully designed website, but nobody visits, it was a complete waste of time – and money.

There are differences in how you attract visitors to your website, compared to your store. Whereas location is of paramount importance to your business ‘offline’, you have to put your website in front of your prospects eyes ‘online’. But, how?

The difficulty most small business owners have is where to find targeted leads (i.e. people that actually need/want the product or service). If 1000 wealthy people visit a website offering debt advice, none of them are likely to be interested in the site. Therefore, as a business owner your goal is to attract visitors that are actually likely to buy from you.

To do this you need to optimize your site through good keyword research. I’m speaking a foreign language again, right?!

Once you have attracted a good website visitor, they need to be able to find the information they are looking for. Failure to make your site easy to use/navigate will lead to the loss of that prospective customer to a competitor that has a good website.

Often websites are overloaded with images. This merely leads to a slow loading page, and causes great frustration to the person trying to view your site. Often this leads to that visitor hitting the back button, leaving your site behind and – once again – possibly finding one of your competitors instead.

These are the main mistakes small business owners make when building their own website – and sometimes when using an expensive web designer too.
